35th INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE TOURING WEEK
A Beautiful Adventure

The International Bicycle Tour by the Sea has been held in Gabicce Mare since 1981, establishing it as one of Italy's most important tourist events for cyclists.

The event is also a fixture on the calendar of the International Bicycling Union. Close to one thousand riders take part, accompanied by family members and friends. The participants, hailing from all parts of Europe and North America, meet each year to ride together on the area's most charming roads, passing through picturesque towns and villages of the inland portion of the Marche and Romagna zones. The event gets underway with an organized welcome in the evening, and it concludes with the presentation of awards to the individual cycle-touring associations.

This event with its unique character was created many years ago. Since then, the town dedicates much attention to the lovers of bicycle tourism at Easter, intensifying its efforts and "caresses" in order to make bike enthusiasts feel welcome and cosy. In Gabicce Mare bicycles are treated as jewels and cyclists are VIP-guests!

This is the secret behind the long-lasting success of this event, for which participants from Italy and abroad gather in Gabicce Mare for an Easter holiday that lasts 10 days. 7 beautiful routes run through the marvellous countryside of the Marches offer breath-takingly beautiful tours, where adventurers on bike can discover new country roads, castles, medieval dwellings in distant valleys, history, art and culture plus - why not? - many culinary delicacies! Specialities such as pasta with chickpeas, tagliatelle, roasted porchetta, bread, piadina-flatbread, exquisite raw ham, homemade sweets, red and white wine will be ready at each stage…. so start dreaming!

The tours cover different distances featuring various degrees of difficulty, but thanks to the excellent technical assistance of SHIMANO everyone can master them. The International Bicycle Touring Week by the Sea as organized by the hotel owners of Gabicce Mare is the only one of its kind in Italy, as it includes a Road Police escort. The police protects and guides the cyclists with high security - in this way particpiants are granted a joyous, spectacular experience - a tradition that started with the first edition many years ago. Stunning fireworks will welcome the friends of pedal power and they will be offered many occasions to party in the streets and the piazza with music and sea fish.

CITY OF SPIRIT
On the slopes of mount Morrone, are the remains of the Sanctuary of Ercole Curino, and the monastery of St. Onofrio, in the XIII century dwelling place of the hermit Pietro Angelerio; famous for his election in 1294 as Pope Celestino V, his subsequent abdication and return to hermitical life. On the occasion of the Jubilee Celestinian Year, the whole town welcomed Pope Benedict XVI.

CITY OF ART
The historic town centre is enclosed within the ancient walls with well-preserved town gates. Many interesting monuments can be seen while walking along the narrow streets. Inside every aristocratic palace, church, in cloisters and courtyards, one can find wide staircases and small porticos, heraldic coats of arms, capitals and engraved porches and wells.

THE DOOR OF THE PARKS
Situated in the centre of three National Parks, Maiella, Gran Sasso, Monti della Laga and a Regional one Sirente-Velino, Sulmona represents the beating heart of "natural tourism" of the Abruzzo countryside. The National Park of Maiella has recently been certified "Pan Parks" for it's management based on the principals of sustainable tourism.

THE MAIELLA NATIONAL PARK
This National Park offers a changeable scenario of an amazing beauty to the visitor all year round. Late spring is the blooming season and it is, together with autumn, the best moment to visit towns and hermitages of the Park. Summer is the season recommended for hiking, for enjoying nature to its full, for reinvigorating surrounded by greenery, for a horse ride or for a nice lunch in the picnic areas. The diversity of environments, the richness of nature, the evidences left by the human presence make Majella National Park the ideal place to go hiking, an activity giving the visitor the opportunity to discover the most concealed aspects of the area.
